I just finished Socrates: A Man for Our Times and gave it 3 stars. This is obviously not Johnson's area of expertise. When there is no historical evidence he substitutes conjecture. He divides the dialogues into real Socrates and Platsoc an ill conceived word for Plato's thought. For no apparent reason he thinks Socrates was nice and Plato mean. A disappointing work for a renowned scholar.
