Very sad to see one of my least favorite things about Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy make an appearance in 1984: infodumping about your world instead of skillfully world building throughout the novel. Why am I reading a book within a book?!?

I hate, hate, HATE when supernatural worlds are spoken about in vague terms at the beginning of books, as if I’m supposed to know the entire world lore. I understand it builds mystery, but it just makes me personally more confused

“Weary drew back his right boot, aimed a kick at the spine, at the tube which had so many of Billy’s important wires in it.” I’m not sure why this quotation stuck out to me, but I like this parallel between Billy’s spine being mechanical, alien like and the Tralfamadorians’ tube like forms
