A gripping, epic, muti-generational tale of colonisation and the destruction of mighty, previously unspoiled and life-nurturing forests.

Jane Stanley is 15% done with Somerset Maugham - Of Human Bondage, & The Moon and Sixpence
I'm actually listening, and only to Of Human Bondage, but that didn't appear on its own on GR.
Very enjoyable coming-of-age novel, autobiographical, with a few changes of detail. Excellent style and tone. I really enjoyed Cakes and Ale, another semi autobiographical work by him, and this 25 hour listen is very engaging so far.

Jane Stanley is 50% done with Wife to Mr. Milton
Despite needing to look up stuff about mid 17thc politics and religious issues from time to time I absolutely love this book and can't put it down!! Great recommendation from Anna Palmer 🥰

Jane Stanley is 2% done with The Conquest of Plassans (La Conquête de Plassans): Betrayal and Ambition in Provincial France: A Tale of Power Struggle and Family Dynamics
Enjoying it a lot so far, and I love the lengthy subtitle that has popped up here when I entered this book in my list! The novel takes up, more or less, from the first one I read in the Rougon-Macquart saga, so it's interesting to see who is related to who and what provincial backbiting and one upmanship they're all playing at.

Jane Stanley is on page 9 of 288 of Newton and the Counterfeiter: The Unknown Detective Career of the World's Greatest Scientist
Looking forward to this as recommended by 2 friends. I have already smiled at Newton writing that Euclid's geometry is 'so easy to understand that (he) wondered how anybody would amuse themselves to write any demonstrations of them'. It's a sort of detective story, which I love, and deals with 'crime, science, logic, obsession and revenge.' Great!!
