Wild ride so far.

I read F. Scott Fifzgerald’s short story The Ice Palace and thought it was excellent. The story is about a southern young woman who, after marrying a northerner, quickly becomes homesick not just for what is familiar but for a people not absorbed in status and judgment.

Interesting to read about Soviet/German cooperation at the outset of WW2. Terrifying all around.

Started reading this, really good so far, but also quite sad given the parallel between ‘American Exceptionalism’ discussed in the introduction and present day.

Very depressing to read about people killing each other over religion.

Reading about all these executions makes me sad. History can be so darn.

The Reformation reminds me a lot of The French Revolution in that this sort of populist uprising to root out corruption and spread liberty became a battle over who truly understood the revolutionary cause. In both instances it seems to just lead to infighting and further segmenting society.
