I think Kennedy’s perspective on black people is very interesting, it’s like her moms. Even Kennedy’s boyfriend knows she doesn’t “have black friends (Bennet 290).” She doesn’t like Jude and Reese and refuses to let them into her life, just like Stella did with Desiree.

I can relate to Kennedy when she is struggling with school and feels like she wants to drop out. Kennedy “managed a better showing than two C minuses, two Ds and a lone B minus (Bennet 228).” While my grades may not match these I feel like it is a bit of a mirror and a window because sometimes I feel like my grades do define me.

Stella feels she is becoming a victim of unspoken rules. Stella who has a white daughter does not want her to know about her black family. She has lied to her daughter her whole life and “like anything, lying to her daughter became easier over time” (Bennet 175). She is even lying to her black neighbor about her true identity.

Today a started noticing that my book has more broad themes than just the twins losing contact. The book is continuing to talk about racism and how people “don’t wanna be (Bennet 69)” white.
I believe that racism is continuing to affect the main storyline it multiple different ways.

When reacting to the text I noticed the author establishes the character’s personality early. She implies that Desiree is more outgoing and “telling Stella a secret was like whispering into a jar and screwing the lid on tight (Bennet 14).”

Something I noticed in the book is the author is using lots of past tense to give background information. She tells a story about how the twins mother believed “they’d had enough schooling (Bennett 10).” This gives the reader insight on to why the twins fled the town

Susan Cain most effectively uses ethos and logos. The author was lots of statistics and studies but also quotes a lot of famous scientists. She talks about a professor “Brian Little, former Harvard University psychology lecturer” (Cain 205). Saying he is from Harvard provides credibility.
