There sure is a lot of exposition in this book.

The author came for Doris Kearns Godwin’s Team of Rivals. Not impressed.

Death Comes to Bath got a little silly but this one is jumping the shark.

I’m loving this book. Interiority; the gap between thought and speech; the foreignness of historical times; the tangled knot between a person’s essential self and the time and place to which that person belongs; the time travel we all engage in by living through time; the way an ancestor’s history determines our own lives. A fun read though I’m getting a little worried about how it’s going to wrap up.

Why am I reading about Mister Bingley instead of Mr. Bingley?

Having a hard time believing Crippen killed his wife.

Also it’s 100% the worst audiobook narration I’ve ever read.

This book is really hard to digest.

Just got to a part that seems to be describing the US economy.

“When we diet, what do we think we’re giving up, and how are we compensating for it?”

Also: capitalism is at the heart of wellness culture.

My reading this last year confirms just how thoroughly our lives have been impacted by capitalism, and the story of Weight Watchers is one more case in point.

Now that I’m close to the end I’m really finding this book thought provoking. A great sentence: Orthorexia is truly the malady of today’s bourgeois woman, what hysteria and fainting spells were to the Victorians.

This woman claims to be a weight that is 80 pounds more than me and 1 inch shorter, and yet she supposedly fits pants one size larger than me? Come on!!!

Dreary and dragging. Too much description of Caroline’s mundane actions and just too much of Caroline altogether, she’s not a compelling character.

I listened to this on audible. Don’t make my mistake.

Super fun!

Could it be that the lives we have so carefully crafted are largely just a product of arbitrary coherence?
