So far I am immediately reminded of Clancy, for two reasons:
1. It’s obvious that the plot of this book has been hugely influential on media since its release. I get the notion that with every set-piece event I’m going to have that “Seinfeld isn’t funny” effect Deja-vu where I feel I’ve seen this before, because I’ve seen imitators.
2.Really exciting concepts written with shocking turgidity.

A little less than halfway through now. A character just epically owned a couple of feminists by virtue of him revealing he’s actually a transgender man and thusly incapable of upholding patriarchal behaviors or thoughts. I’m beginning to think that this Murakami guy may in fact be a little weird about women.

To be honest, I really started reading this because people cite Melville as one of Blood Meridian’s inspirations.
Just hit the 1/4 mark, just after a few chapters detailing the inventory and stocking of a whaling ship before the voyage, and then Ishmael s own personal bestiary of the sea’s whales.
Holy shit, dude.
Those were supposed to be the *boring* chapters??
Why did I wait so long to read this.

Painfully twee and cliché; cute but very ham-fisted and stumbling in its writing, so far. The kind of thing that you read aloud to a kid

Essentially a horror novel. Gut churningly realistic- there’s a couple points where it feels like the plot of American Fiction- where the author was writing about the plight of a black narrator and it’s too on the nose- but I think given the time this was released it makes a lot of sense.

Reading via KOReader so page count isn’t accurate- on chapter 42 of part II. Excellent
