How does a Buddhist monk understand Christianity and what it means to follow Jesus more than today’s (or at the time 20th century) Christians??? Nhat Hanh’s writing was quoted by Brian Recker in his book, Hell Bent, so I knew I would love this little book but I wasn’t prepared for the absolute BARS page after page. AND he was homies with MLK Jr????

Madeline Getz is starting Madame Bovary
A mid-nineteenth century novel written by a French author who hated the privileged rich class, translated into English by an activist , actress, and feminist who just so happened to be the youngest daughter of KARL MARX, and the novel went on TRIAL for OBSCENITY when it was published?!?! Monsieur Flaubert you have me so intrigued….

Wow this prose is very heavy and constant. I’m struggling a little bit to follow but I’m also enjoying taking all of it in very slowly. Well… “enjoying” is maybe too lighthearted a word considering the content. But dang is this so necessary to absorb and process.

Loving how this is written! Very heavy on the think-content but in an approachable and engaging way. Tho this is hefty and dense, reading it immediately after TNOTR is so incredibly refreshing. Ik I’m not even 2 chapters in and I’m still having to really pay attention because so much is being said, but it doesn’t feel like pompous special interest infodumping, and instead like I’m part of the conversation.

“In any case, we need two things: to know how to get into the library at night, and a lamp. You provide the lamp. Linger in the kitchen at dinner hour, take one…”

“A theft?”

“A loan, to the greater glory of the Lord.”

“If that is so, then count on me.”

THEIR DIALOGUE IS SO SHERLOCK & WATSON. 🤣

Ooof what a chunker of a book. My librarian uncle gave me a copy for Christmas, telling me it’s a classic. So far the vibes are Sherlock, but make him a medieval Franciscan monk! Lots and lots of Catholic politics so far, so I’m hoping we get more mystery solving action soon.
