432 pages in my copy. It's decent writing, but it's terribly droll and I have no idea how I'm only about a third of the way through and what else could possibly happen in her boring, sad life unless she actually does something and ignores the yuppies. I'm so glad I wasn't born back then and confined to amuse a husband's friend's wives. Taboo for the win.

595 in this copy. Jesus this goes on forever. Way too verbose. Some points I have no idea what's going on, just get to the point, the language isn't picturesque or helpful. If I didn't read Mystery first, I wouldn't have picked this up and if I read this first, I wouldn't have read Mystery.

Didn't Kay make it a point like 6 (or however many books ago it was, they're all blending together) that her and General Briggs never slept together? But guess Cornwell just decides to change plots every 5 seconds thinking no one remembers anything. Or it's a device that Kay suddenly admits to it because she was trying to forget it before. But it's a bad way of executing it.

Holy crap, I'm so bored. Why does this ramble on and on with so many details just to be so lackluster about their love? Halfway through and I feel like I'm missing something. This could easily be so much shorter. It's taken me so long to read this far but I'm not one to dnf.

The messing with ages really caught up to Cornwell, huh? Lucy was born in 1981, as harped upon in Dust. She would've been 16 in 1997 (unless *I* can't do math). But she was 19 when she was at the FBI Academy in 1997. Sure. She just fluxes between the late teens, they all blend together anyway. Marino should be retiring age by now. And Kay is probably mid to late 50s, but somehow aged backwards.
