This book is making me feel seen in all of my insecurities and deep personal thoughts.

If you buy into the emotional caverns that this book has to explore- it is beautiful. The writing sometimes can be a bit heightened, but I’d argue that I would love to see more books try to push into the heightened but accessible territory that Vuong does. The feelings are real, if at times much, as a young boy navigates the complicated world around him- isn’t that life?

This book retcons Phantom Menace into an interesting place while concurrently makes me disappointed that the sequel trilogies didn’t lean into the plot points pontificated here even more. For a genre book in an established world it really gave a different layer of the world that was refreshing.

If you loved the Architect scene from the Matrix and thought “what if this type of deep dive was used to explore a dissociated mind trying to find the religious truth of the universe because he got a metaphorical laser beam shot into his brain?” This might be for you.
Honestly, loved it-

This book is really something I could see 40 years later being used to understand the mindset and psyche of a certain sect of a generation.
