Time for a reread now that I finally got my hands on my on paperback copy :)

Grimes when I get my hands on you, you'll wish you could hide further than hell

I said it about we could be rats but I feel like Emily Austin writes from inside my brain but fr as a neurodivergent person with hearing loss I never knew my anxiety about social interactions could be related to my hearing loss I thought I was just fucking weird this whole time and now it's 10am and I'm crying bc why didn't any of my ear specialists or therapists ever make this connection for me

The first three sentences are "They don't make evil like they used to. Politicians make policies putting children in cages and allow big companies to pour poison into our air and water. But they will say that they are just doing it to support businesses and that we will all reap the benefit of the poison eventually."

What an intro I'm going into this book blind

"Reason and law don't mean much when white folk want their way." OOP yeah

Im 37% of the way through and have barely any connection to the characters/plot and I know that's not the fault of the writing I just got distracted reading chain gang all stars then sunrise on the reaping while trying to read this too and I can't handle all of it at the same time so light dnf w plans of revisiting later

I'm still in the introduction, but I'm already so excited for this read! In the introduction, Heyam brings up the way culture is integral to the way people view gender and how White nonbinary people oftentimes tokenize other gender nonconforming cultures to validate their own experiences. Then they mention how that contributes to the colonial mindset of how gender is viewed. AND THIS IS JUST THE INTRO

Oh this is a hard read

"Protest can be organized through social media, but nothing is real that does not end on the streets."

The way there are real life statistics about the American prison industrial complex and the reality that Black people have the highest incarceration rate followed by other people of color mixed in with the plot is executed so well. It doesn't feel out of place as one character learns about the chains but also it makes the meaning so much more digestible for people who don't know about our prison systems.
