he talks about growing up in qatar during the gulf war and how in school (the same school i attended in doha) they had to write letters to the american soldiers and like american schools abroad are really just a way for the american empire to expand its soft power(?), just the fact that we had field trips to the US air base or soldiers would come to things like pep rallies, the whole expat thing is a weird phenomenon

he describes dubai as “the mostly empty, half-built construction site it always was” so i already love this book

i’m only one chapter in, but it’s really well written so far and so so heartbreaking. i feel like i’ve been pretty apathetic to american politics for the past year or so and coming off of this election season i’m realizing it was never actually apathy it was just anger- like instead of talking about anything meaningful regarding gun violence during her campaign harris just made jokes about being a gun owner

so much valuable info and this book def was an instrumental part of the reform we’re seeing now in elite women’s gymnastics, i have so many thoughts but i’ll save them for when i finish reading

the first time i really experienced grief was about a year and half ago and i think similarly to the author i correlated whatever was going on at that time to the profound sadness i felt and that sadness was one i never wanted to forget or get over and that led me to holding on to friendships or things that had developed over that time long after they had run their course, we live and we learn

this is actually not good so far like the main character is a HATER and not even in an entertaining way
