Are all characters socially awkward because the author cannot describe human inner monologues and dialogues realistically, or is he so good at creating socially awkward characters by design?

This was a great holiday read, saved me on a delayed flight, ironically, as I had picked this book based on a review saying, among other things, that this was a the perfect fit for a long wait at the airport.
Also, I believe this might have been my first book in the historical fiction genre, which I instinctively avoided so far.
Definitely will continue reading the series.
