Anna is starting Dead Funny: Humor in Hitler's Germany
(cont.) Audiences laughed and did not expect any political message. But the humor in question made them receptive to the campaigns that led to the persecution, ostracism, and extermination of Jews.

The distorted image of Jewishness at the center of Robert and Bertram’s comic plot was not just a reflection of crude beer-tent anti-Semitism. It was part of a coolly planned, larger strategy. A seemingly harmless comedy was a far more effective means of infusing poisonous propaganda than the weekly newsreels. (cont.)

Holy fuck is this book hard hitting on the “jokes are never just jokes when they’re aimed at the marginalized”. Antisemtic “humour” was a primer for the holocaust.

This book is absolutely unhinged. I have to take a break every ten minutes to just PROCESS what I've just read, because the author still seem to be in a state of denial about how terrible this musical would be from it's early conception, disregarding all the technical issues! You literally feel like you've taken crazy pills. I don't know if I should rate it 2 stars or 5. I am so confused. I am so entertained.

"Meine kleine Familiel How are you all this evening?" Von Glower stood in the doorway in a gray wool cape, his frame impossibly tall and broad-shouldered in the garment's graceful lines. He swung it off like Errol Flynn.

What a hetero description of another man, Gabriel.

One corner of Preiss's mouth tipped upwards sardonically. "Do you
like women, Herr Knight?"
"I've been known to," Gabriel said dryly.
"I adore them," Preiss rumbled. (…)his light blue eyes gazed in half-lidded rapture into Gabriel’s
(…)
"And sometimes"—Preiss's eyes widened mockingly—"I vary the game even further. A true gourmand appreciates all kinds of food, all sorts of textures."

"Well, it was your duty, then. Sometimes there's no escaping it.
Have you produced your heir?"
Gabriel laughed. "God, no!"
Von Glower smiled. "No, you don't strike me as a family man. Ah,
well. I suppose all trees eventually stop bearing fruit."

Q: Do you like boysssss
Too bad GK is too compulsary heterosexual to notice the subtext. for a straight man he spends an awful lot of time describing other men’s looks…

Novelization of one of my fav Adv. games. I mean German history? WEREWOLVES?! It was made for me. Only got even better when it got hella gay. Wanted to read the novelization to see subtext in text. And yes. Still super gay. JJ obviously like M/M, but unfortunately the prose are too at times fanficcy/amateur with some tortured similes. GK is more insufferable on paper. But still v. enjoyable. Gay werewolves!

love love love the magic system! Mana which powers spells are generated by doing something that requires considerable effort. Doesnt matter what it IS as long as you consider the activity a CHORE. so u can power up your mana by exercising, or CROCHETING and the more complicated/tedious pattern, the more effective it is. or the more buff u are the less you get from exercising, bcs it is easier. FREAKING BRILLIANT!

This book is so giallo I swear its going to turn out that Stuart is Cordova himself, Nora is him hallucinating a figment of his daughter, which he himself have killed but forgotten about it, but the REAL twist is that this is all happening by a drug induced psychotic break somehow brought on by Hopper who is REALLY Cordova’s disgruntled DP.

nah, but seriously tho the mystery is off the rails and im loving it

“National Socialism was a revulsion by my friends against parliamentary politics, parliamentary debate, parliamentary government—against all the higgling and the haggling of the parties and the splinter parties, their coalitions, their confusions, and their conniving. It was the final fruit of the common man’s repudiation of “the rascals.” Its motif was, “Throw them all out.” Drain the swamp?👀

Reading this because it was recommended on “Behind the Bastard” as an insight into how “the common man” of Germany became involved into the Nazi party without prior indications of fascism (and in some cases the opposite!) The author, a Jewish (undisclosed) American journalist, travelled to Germany and interviewed 10 of these low ranking party members, building a rapport so close they consider him a friend...

Ooof that hurtling chaos of a depressive breakdown is portrayed spot on. When you’re so vulnerable and desperate for someone - anyone to reach out to you, only so you can reject them, because you don’t deserve their help. And I am sitting on the edge of my seat reading, because ypu know that the tiniest wind can blow her either over the edge or to safety. Its the sort of writing which only comes from experience

Heartbreaking insight into the destructive effects of colonisation on a nation's psyche. The facts and history of Denmark's colonisation of Greenland is criminally unspoken in schools and public debate, leading to the sort of ignorant, hurtful and Otherizing comments that the protagonist has to deal with studying in Denmark. Also I want to slap the racists bastards!

and quick reads. But this just drags on and on and on, and are very slow to get to the juicy bits, which are the possesion and horror. And it seems to be playing it much more seriously than I expected, but are hitting neither serious horror or humor so far. It seems to not know what exactly it wants to be and I dont really care about the characters (even though we are treated to a loooot of tedious backstory

Perhaps it’s because I don’t have any nostalgia for the 80s (I was born 92), or because I don’t have any relationship with the American High School experience (being Danish). Perhaps it’s because I am listening to it, instead of reading. But something is just not clicking with this book. I have previously enjoyed books by the same author, Horrorstör and Satan Loves You, which where both very entertaining

P.S I am calling it now, but (SPOILERS!) it’s definitely Nami’s grandfather who has kidnapped the girl and ran over Kazuya in his car, and then donated Kazuya’s eye to Nami, right? My suspicions were raised when Nami said she hasnt visited his house yet. And the author is luring us in to a false sense of security by making grandpa the only one whos nice to Nami after the memoey loss. Freaking brilliant Osuichi!
