There is something wildly frustrating when an author has a character describe a different plan they had and reveals they had a much better idea for a plot than the final product turned out. That is WAY more interesting (if perhaps less commercial) - a doctoral candidate Frankensteins her abusive advisor. Like. Kuang. Where is that book? That's a way better book!

I don't think much of Kuang's editor considering how often they let a supposedly British character say things like "math" and "anyways." Shows a lack of care tbh

The setting is engaging, but good lord, this relationship is *not* convincing, are you joking, the "they have to huddle for warmth and he wakes up with a boner" trope?? Ooh she gets so annoyed with their academic rivalry I wonder what forced romance plot is on the way.

I can't for the life of me understand all the reviews calling this book slow, when the tension slowbuild is so incredibly well-executed. The unseen threat is horrible and immense because the scale of it gets so much time to develop.

There's a definite pattern where every time someone introduces a new character and talks about how much they like them, they're about to die on the next page. So far we're down two academics, a librarian, and a cat.

Narrator Claire Vousden seems to think that a posh accent will hide her poor ennunciation. She pronounces secretary as "sec-ut-y" and dissolution as "disillusion". Hugely annoying. Very whig of you.

There's a running theme of Victoria the hypochondriac constantly begging off work, but honestly I believe her. Nobody is that willing to inconvenience so many people out of laziness. She had nine pregnancies and PPD multiple times, her own mother tried to steal her throne while she was ill, she watched her husband waste away and die from overwork, of course she gets stress migraines and wants to WFH.
