Arin notices she knows the death rites, and she lies & says she learned under tutors before the war. He asks her where she works, and she takes him to Rory when he asks to give an excuse to her employer. When Arin leaves, Rory accuses her of leading the Nizahl Hier into Mahair, calling her Esssiya, revealing he always knew she was the Jasad Heir.

A Jasad baker is found to be doing low-level magic. He’s lived in Mahair for over 40 years, before the Jasad kingdom was destroyed, but the soldiers try to apprehend him. He runs and is killed. Sylvia foolishly offers to help the Sounders carry the body through the woods & she sneakily does the Jasad death rites to the body when they bring the body to Arin, the Nizahl Heir, in the camp.

Sylvia worries that really bad consequences will follow up on the village Mahair and the soldiers will start looking for JASADI survivors and blame them. She has a memory of watching her family burn to death in the ballroom and it’s pretty graphic, but she is reminded that she is the heir, to the JASAD throne.

Her best friends help her without question to desecrate the body enough to make it look like a wild animal attack, and that he fell down a ravine into the river. They take the body back to the river and let it float off.

It is revealed she is the heir to the JASAD thrown who was supposedly burned to death with all of her people 11 years ago. She manages to kill the soldier. She drugs. The soldier body home, so it’s never caught and wakes up her friends to a lot of alarm

In the dead of night, she tries to cross the wall illegally with a basket full of food and supplies. She thinks she’s being steal enough, but a soldier catches her and recognizes her as JASADI. He tells her to surrender, and he’ll take her for a trial that she knows she won’t survive it.

She keeps her distance from the laws that she can, and doesn’t use her magic because of cuffs that were attached to her wrist to block it from an early age that she’s never been able to get off. Her two best friends, Merric and Sefa, break into her house to cook when she gets home. Even though they’re not related, they’re very close and are more like brother and sister.

Sylvia is a courier for the local chemist in town named Rori. He gives her a gift of some really fine gloves on the day that she stated is her birthday. She is a girl who is a ascendant of the JASADI, a magical race of people who have been outpawed.

Oro realized he loved her when he saw the arrow shot through her heart. She realizes her crown is the missing key to that door that she couldn’t find. She puts it in and the door opens.

Aurora & Isla battle in the hall of mirrors, and Isla realized the original offense that caused the curse was the betrayal of a best friend. She stabs Aurora in the heart, killing her. As the land breaks & swallows them, Oro accesses her powers and saved Isla.

Celeste/Aurora had gotten all of abilities from
the six realms, now— it wasn’t a bond breaker but a bond maker Isla captured and tried to use. Luckily, Isla brought the starstick and portals away, heartbroken that Grim took away the memories of their love to try to gain all the power in Lightlark- he knew who Aurora was, and went along with it, but Aurora lied.

Ilsa finds the bond breaker with Celeste and uses it once Grim is there, only to have him yelp in surprise as Isla uses it. Celeste changes into Aurora, only of the original rulers, and is evil. She explains how Isla is part Wildling & Nightshade, and how she tricked Grim into taking away Isla’s memories so she could seduce Oro.

She meets with the other rulers, minus Grim & Cleo. She competed the original sin that split the realms, but a realm has to die/be destroyed. The other rulers want it to be nightshade or skyling because they have the smallest populations. Isla does not want to make the choice with them.

The heart is within a magical floating egg. The moment Isla picks it up, she gets an arrow to the art. She think she dies, but wakes up in her bed in the palace.

Grim & Isla search the Place of Mirrors and she figure out Cleo was trying to kill her off and Azul too. She makes love to Grim, and then when discussing the bird that almost killed her, she has a realization of where the heart is.

Oro takes Isla to the star isle. When they arrive a silver, Spectre asked to inhabit Isla’s body and then she’ll give an answer. After she does it, she tells her that what she’s looking for is not there. Isla tries to manipulate Oro into taking her to the Sunling Library, he refuses, saying he said he’d take her, but didn’t say when.

Isla is busy looking for the key, and tries to ask Juniper again but he doesn’t have information. Grim finds her, and offers some assistance. He takes her to a cathedral and then to fly over the ocean. He reminds her he’s not good for her.

Isla ventures into the abandoned Wild Isle, the old home of the Wildlings. She comes across a door with a spiral on it, like the one the starstick was hidden behind in her mother’s room. She searches for the key.

The other Moonlings explain to Isla that they need the curse to be broken— and it can only fall if one ruler dies, and they don’t want their realms to fall, so they try to kill Isla, but fail, because Celeste shows up. They leave a message for Cleo— try harder.

Oro takes her to the sky realm to look for the heart. They check purse plants night after night, but never find anything. He tells her she’ll know it by the energy. She knows he’s her only ticket to the Sunling library, so she plays along

Oro takes her to the storm-tossed mountains. After a test of trust, they end up in an oasis inside a mountain, where he reveals he’s the conduit for Lightlark, but he thinks the heart of LL is dying, and it’s a plant that needs help finding, which is where Isla comes in. He can fly, too, so that’s how he takes her home.

That night, the king comes to her room and asked her to make a deal with him. She agrees to it, and then he tells her he can’t sense her abilities, he thinks she is cloaking them. He’s going to take her to the Isles where she cannot look like a wildling bc the Wildings screw them over.

For the last demonstration, the King chooses Isla.they know the bond breaker is in the Sunling library. The king also tells them this is probably their last centennial before the curse is permanent and the rulers lines die off.

Oro has a demonstration after everyone has drunk three cups of tea: the tea leaves spell out their biggest secret. One by one, each participant shatters their cups to cover for it, but Oro reveals he is dying.

Isla knocks them out and runs through the castle with guard chasing her. She comes across a wall, and realizes there is something behind it. She uses Cleo’s gloves and gets in. The ocean is rattling it, and it’s all froZen books. She sees the relics floating underneath in the water, but not the bondbreaker. She uses her starstick to portal away.

Isla sneaks into the moon realm dressed as a moonling on the full moon. She thinks everyone is inside, but a few guards see her. They are patrolling. Cleo is building an army for some reason.

She becomes determined to get the Bondbreaker
