I’ve never read anything like this and now I’m hooked

My taste in books is the same as my life; all over the place.

Figured I should finally properly learn a bit about my history (though I’m not American), especially with the current state of the world.

I’m intrigued! Just finished the first chapter. Didn’t think the book would start this way; very gray and melancholic. Makes me curious about how everything will unfold.

Loving the writing so far

“Some might argue that games should reward talent and skill and hard work precisely because real life doesn’t. But to me the real fairness is when everyone has a shot to win, even if their hands are small, even if they haven’t been playing the game [Mario Kart] since 1992.” Ok John Green; I don’t think I ever would have gotten a metaphor comparing Mario Kart to real life otherwise.

I’d be lying if I said I’m actually reading the book; I’m only getting the quick version thru deepstash. Nevertheless; feels like it was written through the pov of a man that thinks he’s an alpha. Can’t say I agree with all the rules so far; has a bit of a pessimistic view of the world. I know the world isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, but still; must be exhausting to see the world like the author does.

“For me anyway, to fall in love with the world is to look up at the night sky and feel your mind swim before the beauty and the distance of the stars.” I think I’m gonna like this book.

It reminds me of A Little Life, but it isn’t ripping my heart apart as much (don’t get me wrong though, I’ve still cried multiple times while reading this book already).

I fall in love with this author’s writing a little more every time I read a new book of his.

Book club read #5 (finally throwing a French book in there)

Good, as always. Back in my hunger games era.

Never thought I’d read a book comparing human life to a snail’s, but here we were. I’m finding it surprisingly more interesting than I thought I would.

Book club read #3 (Abby’s pick)

I’m loving it. It’s so interesting to hear about how people figured out world travelling long term in the late 20th century; it was a different game than now, pre-internet era. It’s also making me realize that there are even more ways to solo/long term travel than I thought; I never would have thought of going to consulates of other countries. But maybe it’s different today; I’ll just have to find out!

@SG: I’m getting back into this book, and restarting it - it’ll be more interesting to read it from a new perspective, post 1.5-year backpacking.
