Kind of confused. Someone essentially nukes Magic Island, everyone there dies, since then no one is born able to use magic. since then people from the island on mainland are killed to "try and bring magic back"? why would that work, it went away bc everyone from Magic Island died. seems dumb. also explicitly stated there are other regions in the world that were completely unaffected, go see how they get their magic?

Done the first book of the two. Characters are threadbare, world is threadbare, theres nothing special about anything that would keep me coming back for more. Its not bad, I just cant think of a single thing that stands out. There aren't any insane cons but there also isnt anything I think is really good. Kind of misogynist but I've read worse, def feels like babys first fantasy with all the usual tropes included

Author is really bad at conveying information as anything other than an info dump. I have no idea what anyone or anything looks like outside of "lake" or "wooden door" like give me some more info dude. Dialouge is pretty clunky. So far underwhelming but not terrible, just pretty dry.

The two main characters genuinely just believe the person who talked to them most recently. I don't know if theyre capable of any independent critical thinking at all, just be their most recent point of contact and hope no one talks to them afterwards and they will do whatever you want them to do.

dialouge kind of sucks. homie you dont have to tell me that this guy is trying to marry this other dudes rich daugther to have access to her dowry rather than for love, i can pick up on context clues. lots of telling and not showing so far, esp for super easy to pick up on things. author needs to assume that ive read another fantasy book before bc this is silly. not bad though, just annoying. we'll see

hell yeah so good. super lord huron-y vibes so far. a little annoying that there arent any quotation marks around the dialouge though but you get used to it

Forgot how fast paced YA is. Gets way darker and more violent at times than I expected, but characters are shallow and one note and the dialogue is so insanely bad I skip it most of the time since it induces so much cringe. Interesting though

The guy is dying of hypothermia in 1100s England like 4 hours after burying his wife who died in childbirth and gets fucked back to life by his situationship they met like 6 months ago? They bone and that saves him from dying of exposure? How the fuck was she even in the area in the first place. Then, 4 hours post bone, he asks her to marry him??? YOUR WIFE AND MOTHER OF YOUR CHILDREN HAS BEEN DEAD FOR 8 HOURS

Why is the power differences between the gods so insane. Lik-Rifa is like a 200 foot long dragon, and then theres the rat god and I feel like i could do some serious damage to him if i tried. Also why are there like 4 gods MAX in this pantheon. where are the rest of them. also why did the war 300 years ago happen we've gotten no details on that. why do half these gods hate each other.

some POVs are very slowly losing their charm. Gudvarr yes you are a coward can you stop questioning whether or not you are every 45 seconds. The whole tainted aspect was very fun when it was more subtle, now we have human people getting an all fours and howling. idk it just feels like a big escalation compared to the last book. still enjoying though. chapters are too short though

So the dad calls the townspeople idiots and looks down on them for their superstition, but HIS superstitions are so cool and correct and morally just and connected to a deeper history, so unlike those other idiots who share very similar superstitions. But they live in town so they’re so dumb and narrow minded with their silly ideas and foolish superstitions

For one of the best books ever it really reads like a male middle school power fantasy. I actually hate the main character why is he soooo good at everything immediately. Is there anything Kvothe can’t do?? I hate him

Hadrian can see ‘some’ stars through the worst rainstorm he’s ever been in? Has this author ever been outside. You can’t have a clear sky AND be at risk of drowning from the rain at the same time

First bit of extended dialogue between the two brothers not-Paul and not-Feyd and it’s so garbage I can’t lie. I can see what the author is trying to put down but he is fumbling sooo bad. I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series unless things really change

Also includes a horrible mishmash of Greek culture (like 3000 years of it), Roman, Egyptian and Sumerian AND English Medieval that makes so sense and I am really struggling to make sense of. They have interstellar nukes but they still make walled castes?? Dawg WE don’t even do that anymore what are you TALKING about

Kind of annoying so far. Dumbass commentary on communism ‘they didn’t even recognize the individual’ but apparently it’s been 16 THOUSAND years since earth like died?? So I’m sorry I don’t believe these concepts would have survived for so long. We don do the same shit they were doing 16 thousand years ago culturally, and I don’t believe these guys would either

Priests must not be very sacred in Luceum because they die all the time and then there are no social consequences for the people who loudly pronounce that they kill them. okok theyre in a war right now, wouldnt Gol's own side WHO ALREADY HATES HIM murder him for killing like the most sacred guy around. Theres a couple mumbles but then they just party, but we're constantly told that the driuds are holy. makes no sense

also the timeskips are so bad. every POV change has whole vauge months in between where i just have to accept whatever is presented to me on page. even worse in Res where i actually like some of the side characters. Eidhin has had like 3 lines the whole book. all their convos together are an exposition dump and "and then we chatted and it felt like old times. Anway" like i dont get to see them doing anything together
