noooo the book that outlawed gender for 3.7 books got a little gender-essentialist on me how could this ever happen. the idea that women are more humane or wouldv'e made this war "better" is insane when one woman in THIS CURRENT BOOK successfully nuked the moon TWICE, one is a stalker/global cult leader that tortures people, and another is actively trying to commit a genocide. strange position to take at the very end

21% of the way through an nothing has happened. I have no idea why any of these characters would want to murder someone. THIS IS A MURSER MYSTERY. They’re all so one note and boring. There was no need to have 5 main characters, they’re similar enough it could have just been 3. The magic system makes no sense and I’m getting the feeling it won’t be explained any more than it already has. Boring!

I’m realizing I like this series so much because it’s just a retelling of the First World War with all of the political buildup and interconnectedness that caused it. Banging

still confused. starting to become a little bit clearer, the motivations of some of the characters and how they tie together is starting to be a bit better. Still wish the stakes were better defined, or maybe i missed them? I dont really get what the big deal is about the seven-ten list or what will happen if the public finds out it was stolen? if someone unexpected wrote it? like i just dont get what the deal is

So insanely confused. The writing is good but i never have any idea whats going on. Hoping things become a lot clearer with time

Banging so far. Spooky and scary, the translation is soooo good doesn’t even feel like it’s a translated work it’s so natural. Really impressive artwork, author is really good at setting up tension

oh and the simulation stuff feels hamfisted. Character walking to his house on his moon colony actively thinking about "oh does anything matter if its not real" and then is like omg I cant wait for the scheduled rain to come! Even if the rain isn't spontaneous or "real" in the literal sense I still love it! like dude you have to separate those two thoughts a little bit. Let me ponder yk

And the time travel / simulation stuff is very 2015 tumblr to be so real. The connections between the characters feel very secondary and convenient, like the book feels plotted out rather than unfurling naturally i guess? Like im always aware of the author behind the writing. Also the exerpt of the book tour book was so bad. hope it gets better in the last half

Started very strong, second perspective was kind of boring but whatever, third one sucked actual ass. Felt like an author insert who wrote the most boring novel of all time and couldn't be bothered to think about it critically. We follow her through a book tour, and people are like "why did you make this part anticlimatic" and "what are the themes" and shes like oh haha i didnt think that far into it. HUH??

This author doesn’t know how to get information across in any elegant way at all. It’s 100% long winded infodumping from damn near omniscient characters. He’s introduced off-brand three-eyed raven right now, and it’s just a full rip off of game of thrones. Soooo insanely bad oh my god

Starting to feel like things are just kind of happening. Some of these characters are fucking stupid. Let’s send the nazi sympathizer with an army of 30 000 people to go arrest the nazi, surely she won’t betray us! Characters are all split up and they’re boring on their own. Everyone who figures something out dies the next scene without updating anyone. Honestly a huge downgrade compared to book 1.

Super boring until the last 40% and then it gets insane. honestly such a sick as hell concept, but the character work could be better. Main characters older sister dies and she basically goes "oh no :( anyway" which feels insane. Author is definitely more preoccupied with plot over character. Very concerned in the future of the trilogy tho bc i dont know how you solve these issues in two more books. we shall see

Good concept but I don’t really care about anything happening or any of the characters? I have no idea how much time has past, none of the interpersonal connections or intrigue are really landing for me so far. Not bad but disappointing

really starting to drag. Hate the use of modern terms like "hyper-fixation" in the main characters internal dialouge, really dates the writing. The plot seems to be completely wrapped up now and I have no idea what we're going to do for the next 200 pages which is a bad thing. I'm actually starting to resent it a bit since the premise is good but the execution is so underwhelming.

A little bit dry, the characters feel a little bit flat and one note. I wish i knew more about them and liked them a little more. Also theres a bit of an issue with establishing stakes, nothing ever feels that serious? Also the dialouge is wayyyyy too modern, doesnt fit with the setting at all. The few action scenes are super hard to follow, i never know whats going on. not bad at all, just definitely a debut yk.

Kind of confused. Someone essentially nukes Magic Island, everyone there dies, since then no one is born able to use magic. since then people from the island on mainland are killed to "try and bring magic back"? why would that work, it went away bc everyone from Magic Island died. seems dumb. also explicitly stated there are other regions in the world that were completely unaffected, go see how they get their magic?

Done the first book of the two. Characters are threadbare, world is threadbare, theres nothing special about anything that would keep me coming back for more. Its not bad, I just cant think of a single thing that stands out. There aren't any insane cons but there also isnt anything I think is really good. Kind of misogynist but I've read worse, def feels like babys first fantasy with all the usual tropes included

Author is really bad at conveying information as anything other than an info dump. I have no idea what anyone or anything looks like outside of "lake" or "wooden door" like give me some more info dude. Dialouge is pretty clunky. So far underwhelming but not terrible, just pretty dry.

The two main characters genuinely just believe the person who talked to them most recently. I don't know if theyre capable of any independent critical thinking at all, just be their most recent point of contact and hope no one talks to them afterwards and they will do whatever you want them to do.

dialouge kind of sucks. homie you dont have to tell me that this guy is trying to marry this other dudes rich daugther to have access to her dowry rather than for love, i can pick up on context clues. lots of telling and not showing so far, esp for super easy to pick up on things. author needs to assume that ive read another fantasy book before bc this is silly. not bad though, just annoying. we'll see
