Niche complaint maybe but I’m finding the character names in this really distracting and annoying. Too many syllables and they seem like something a 10 year old would come up with

Book 1 done! I’ve been reading this on the train this morning and when I came back from the bathroom a wee guy opposite me said “excuse me are you reading LOTR” and I said yes and then he showed me a booking confirmation for his trip to Hobbiton in New Zealand 😭 hobbit besties

Omg! My favourite characters in East of Eden (fiction) were Sam Hamilton and Lee the cook, and this book (a sort of autobiography) has revealed that John’s dad was called Sam Hamilton and his cook Lee!

This is so random because I read this book when I was 9 years old living in Spain but I’ve been feeling so nostalgic recently and wanted to read something light-hearted in the lead up to the wedding so I want to reread this! I hope I love it again

25% in and so far I think this book should be vital reading for the girls! Since coming off the coil I’ve been on a menstrual health journey and I’m learning so much about our cycles and symptoms already

I’m on page 533/1200 and I’m struggling big time really not enjoying :-( feel like I’ve been reading it forever and I’m only 46% through. There is no real story and I usually like some philosophical rambling but this is testing me

“People speak sometimes about the ‘animal’ cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to animals. No animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel. A tiger simply gnaws and tears, that is all he can do. It would never occur to him to nail people by the ears overnight, even if he were able to.”

I’m actually really enjoying the vibe of this book lol but it is BUGGING me because the author is American but one of the characters is Welsh and supposedly calls his dad “da” (Scottish and Irish imo) and says things like “shite happens” and “bloke”. Nuh uh.

I had admired the perfect forms of my cottagers - their grace, beauty, and delicate complexions: but how was I terrified, when I viewed myself in a transparent pool! At first I started back, unable to believe that it was indeed I who was reflected in the mirror; and when I became fully convinced that I was in reality the monster that I am, I was filled with the bitterest sensations of despondence and mortification

Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowleage and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow.

Darkness had no effect upon my fancy; and a churchyard was to me merely the receptacle of bodies deprived of life, which, from being the seat of beauty and strength, had become food for the worm.

Pt2: It is so long before the mind can persuade itself that she, whom we saw every day, and whose very existence appeared a part of our own, can have departed forever - that the brightness of a beloved eye can have been extinguished, and the sound of a voice so familiar and dear to the ear can be hushed, never more to be heard.

Joanna is finished with Sense and Sensibility
“The world had made him extravagant and vain - extravagance and vanity had made him cold hearted and selfish. Vanity, while seeking its own guilty triumph at the expense of another, had involved him in a real attachment, which extravagance, or at least its offspring necessity, had required to be sacrificed. Each faulty propensity in leading him to evil had led him likewise to punishment.” Poor Marianne!
