So excited to dive into this! My dear Armenian language professor in college wrote it and I remember she read passages of it at events. So excited to read it in its full form!

Picking this back up! Read it 6 years ago and I loved it

This book is such a blessing … so healing already .. I see so much of my great-grandparents, my grandparents, my parents, and myself in this book. Truly this is the only novel that exists about the Ethiopian-Armenian diaspora … I feel very lucky to be reading this at this point in my life, and for it to exist. 1300 Armenians used to live in Ethiopia, and now only 100-150 exist. This book is an act of preservation

I’m soooo excited to read this! One of the few, if only, Ethiopian-Armenian works of fiction. I can’t wait to see myself in this as an Ethiopian-Armenian

It’s basically April aka Armenian genocide awareness month aka I’m only reading Armenian literature this month. This book is a queer Armenian novel and I’ve read this author’s work before and it’s sooooo corny but literally there are so few other options for Armenian queer literature LOL

I’d like to think this book inspired toys like the plastic army men and GI Joe in addition to war movies like Rambo LOL!!

Ok literally much of this book is the mf Henry being like “my leg hurts” “this war is stupid” and his gf Catherine being like “I love you darling”

It’s taking me a while to get into this mostly because Hemingway was so clearly drunk when he wrote it lol. It’s like reading someone’s drunken text messages

Gf has been wanting me to read this for a year and I keep forgetting to and finally I’ve picked it up and I love it so far!

Not to be that person … bc everyone’s stories are valid .. but it took forever for the author to get to the part where she first connects with JD Salinger … finally the tea has begun

I plan on re-reading Said’s Question of Palestine but I remember it being sooo dense, so I picked this up as a palette cleanser

Truly just awful writing .. who even was her editor

I’m only like 20 pages in and the writing is just plain awful…. She could reduce a whole paragraph to a sentence and that would be better than the overly descriptive, platitudinous run ons… I can already see where this book is going and I think if we’re talking about stories of child actors and stage moms etc, the Natalie wood biography is more compelling (and juicy).. but idk I’ll still give this a chance

I wanna see what all the hype was about ..

Yearly tradition… my copy is signed btw… when I checked this out from the library 14 years ago the library receipt was inserted on the page where the letter entry was dated on my birthday …

Ok 200 pages later I’m feeling it … truly part 1 of the book aka the first 117 pages is so lame and boring but part 2 and beyond so far are really fun and I like the slow burn. I think the book could’ve done without the entirety of part 1 and maybe just condense it to like 30 pages max ….

Honestly a little boring 😭 rn it’s a whole lot of “I love god” and “I love the zoo” .. I missed the boat on this one when the movie came out but I’m wondering if that’s for the best… wondering if I’m even gonna finish it lol
