I love how we are placed in the prison of Tambu’s mental colonization without in perfect bits of theory. As frustrating as it is at times, it is so realistic to how Black teenager exists in white schools, the nervous condition that develops from know you are Black without anyone having to tell you the rules of the game (ask me how I know)

The parents bear some responsibility for entertaining this nonsense. Doctors and lawyers but got no sense.

this book is so funny

oh God. He is finally back to torturing us with navel gazing. we get it, you will go back to your "ivory tower". this is suppose to be an ethnography.

I take back my earlier update. I understand the confusion because an ethnography this is not. this is far more of a narrative nonfiction than an ethnography and I am certain De Leon knows that. I am going to finish this with an open mind HOWEVER I do think my already negative impression is salvageable.

I found the intro aggravating and worried that was a bad sign for the actual meat of the book but then I am reading negative reviews and most of these people do not understand anthropology or what an ethnography is. De Leon even knew this so he explained both terms/practices in the intro that people obvious did not read. le sigh.

this book would kill a non-black person

I was lukewarm to the possibility of reading this until I decided I wanted to complete all the monthly challenges and try new things bookwise this year. anyway this book is hilarious!! I could tell from the first sentence I would love it.

This first chapter left me worried this would be dull but instead she includes cringe inducing quips like a cringe tweeting gen x-er ugh. i know it is nitpick-y but I hate stuff like that.
