Her foresight on gender sexual relations and her ability to inadvertently predict hookup culture and its disappointments makes this book five stars allow in my opinion.

I doubt in the year of our Lord 2026 she would be saying some of this. these essays are like an endearing time capsule to a more naive and innocent time.

People who aggressively hate classics and people who take classics too seriously are different sides of the same coin. TCoMC is old and long but it just the heart of a children’s story. It’s fun and unserious but still well written and intentional.

she uses "anti-LGBTQ policies" and excuses it by wanting to use current terminology. I always think it is a disservice to the real lives of people in the past to not use the "past" terminology slightly ahistorical. the past terminology in this case being 'homophobia' which is what. it isn't a dirty word rhae

The charm of this is beginning to wane. Some chapters are incredibly strong (1-3) where he does a good job being the layman’s anthropologist, blending history and culture while staying firmly rooted in the present. In Ch. 4 and 5 I really feel the weakness of his skills as a writers. Narrative gets lots and these chapters lose focus and become meandering, too romantic and philosophical that it feels out of place.

If you asked me why Jenny cared so much I wouldn’t have an answer. I see the potential but the book is poorly constructed in terms of plot and character development. Some developments are better suited for a bad domestic thriller (ie all doemstic thrillers) than an upmarket novel.

I am going to finish another 100 pages today and finish tomorrow. my biggest gripe with this book is that Jenny's interest in Rachelle doesn't feel earned. I was expecting a genuine...neighborly familiarity if not burgeoning friendship but it is not that at all.

What stops Kawakami from being great is she doesn’t trust her characters. As a reader, I can sense how tightly controlled her characters are. Like when she starts a draft, she has an inflexible view of character development and then refuses to budge on that idea regardless of how the plot progresses.

Really don’t feel sympathy for Sociopath Jr. and even less for his family who keep making him some innocent victim when he choked out his own mother. If anything, lives have been saved.

I hate to read the wikipedia summary because I knew the other shoe would drop eventually and I couldn’t stand the stress. Now I can read this novel in peace.
