it is really interesting that in an increasingly childless society, there is a concept, if not outright disdain, for women who are and want to become mothers. Kim Jiyoung, 1984 echoes this. I even see this in online american spaces, despite having replacement level fertility. the difference I suppose is that SK actively has fewer children so this kind of behavior DOES come out in real life.

how do I say this as rudely as possible? this is world literature for people who don't actually like reading world literature. I am only finishing this because I want to write a negative review lol. congrats to the person at my local park who is going to find this in the little free library on Friday.

Her foresight on gender sexual relations and her ability to inadvertently predict hookup culture and its disappointments makes this book five stars allow in my opinion.

I doubt in the year of our Lord 2026 she would be saying some of this. these essays are like an endearing time capsule to a more naive and innocent time.

People who aggressively hate classics and people who take classics too seriously are different sides of the same coin. TCoMC is old and long but it just the heart of a children’s story. It’s fun and unserious but still well written and intentional.

she uses "anti-LGBTQ policies" and excuses it by wanting to use current terminology. I always think it is a disservice to the real lives of people in the past to not use the "past" terminology slightly ahistorical. the past terminology in this case being 'homophobia' which is what. it isn't a dirty word rhae

The charm of this is beginning to wane. Some chapters are incredibly strong (1-3) where he does a good job being the layman’s anthropologist, blending history and culture while staying firmly rooted in the present. In Ch. 4 and 5 I really feel the weakness of his skills as a writers. Narrative gets lots and these chapters lose focus and become meandering, too romantic and philosophical that it feels out of place.
