Must I Go
The unacknowledged weirdly lesbian-coded storyline in what I can only describe as a nauseatingly heterosexual novel is so strange here

The women fighting brutally over ajax is almost a subversion of traditional gender roles? He’s the one who has agency and has multiple women but the women themselves are also possessive over him. In that way they’re almost both assertive?
Something subversive here though…

Feel like 120-121 section about Sula is very in line with the braking of boundaries that A Life of Ones Own explores and rests on and in that way Sula is like Lila

There was only her own mood and whim, and if that was all there was, she decided to turn the baked hand toward it, discover it and let others become as intimate with their own selves as she was.

What to make of this spider metaphor? She spends practically a whole page on it…

Their conviction of sulas evil actually changed the community in really positive ways. Both the sort of external evil makes for great unity when things are bad internally declare war on something external vibe. But also like teapots mamma becomes a good mother after sula “pushed” him. Also the wives love their husbands better cuz sula sleeps with them once and discards them

“Devil all right.”
“No two ways about it,” Dessie said and she popped the rubber band off the deck of cards to settle them down for a nice long game of bid whist.

…curious… bibi story . not sure how I feel about it . almost a little magical realism esque. Not sure i agree with the ending but then again that’s life. Unexpected which is good i guess. hm.

This Blessed House was great and also felt like something written for an English class? But loved the scene at the end when they’re all in the attic and he’s just down there. How perfectly captured. Nice story. Not sure thoughts on the character development though ?

Sometimes all you need is some outside change or force that pushes you out of your routine or forces you guys to do something slightly silly to break out of the closed system/cycle of stagnation. Eg a power outage.

So perfectly executed. Sometimes the books you randomly stumble on are the most wonderful. Serendipity?
