“Here she was in St. James' Street; a married woman; with a ring on her finger; where there had been a coffee house once there was now a Restaurant; it was about half past three in the afternoon; the sun was shining; there were three pigeons; a mongrel terrier dog; two hansom cabs and a barouche landau. What then, was Life?”

Woolf is mad funny like I genuinely love her. Are all her books this funny?

“Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than merely to keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world's view of us. Thus, there is much to support the view that it is clothes that wear us and not we them; we may make them take the mould of arm or breast, but they mould our hearts, our brains, our tongues to their liking.”

“And so bewildered as usual by the multitude of things which call for explanation and imprint their message without leaving any hint as to their meaning upon the mind, she threw her cheroot out of the window and went to bed”

“Here she tossed her foot impatiently, and showed an inch or two of calf. A sailor on the mast, who happened to look down at the moment, started so violently that he missed his footing and only saved himself by the skin of his teeth. "If the sight of my ankles means death to an honest fellow who, no doubt, has a wife and family to support, I must, in all humanity, keep them covered," Orlando thought.”

Listen. ‘David Hockney loves lenses’ is my main take away from this book.

“The sky is blue," he said, "the grass is green." Looking up, he saw that, on the contrary, the sky is like the veils which a thousand Madonnas have let fall from their hair; and the grass fleets and darkens like a flight of girls fleeing the embraces of hairy satyrs from enchanted woods.

Favourite sentences:

“investigate the delicate articulation of one of the doctor's longest and most marvellously contorted cogitations.”

“Nature, who has played so many queer tricks upon us, making us so unequally of clay and diamonds, of rainbow and granite, and stuffed them into a case, often of the most incongruous, for the poet has a butcher's face and the butcher a poet's”

Really great so far. Love the entangling lives, the threads, and all of it told in this very direct, pulpy style that is very easy and pleasant to read

I have no idea how far into it I am as I’m listening on Spotify’s audiobook service but I love this so far. This book is legit like ‘haha’ hilarious. My favorite movie growing up was (part 1 of - my grandparents had only recorded thr first part from the telly) Richard Lester’s 1973 adaptation of the book and it’s a hoot. Who knew it was much more accurate than the grimmer modern adaptations.
