I’m reading this for book club, so I’m trying really hard to find something to talk about that isn’t bad character development…. Why are we trying so hard to set up the grumpy-sunshine couple trope in a book that’s not a romcom? And he’s not grumpy so much as a really rude asshole….

Are the flashbacks to Alice’s childhood even necessary? I can’t tell yet. But it feels like no.

I’m not sure I’ve ever hated characters more… I’m only finishing this for Frankie and Pugsley.

For that “I don’t see color and I was taught to treat everyone the same” camp… If you’re reading this book and feeling like it’s an impossible conundrum that you can’t win, consider that racial prejudice is something that you SHOULD recognize so that you can CHALLENGE IT, rather than deny its existence.

My initial assessment after just an hour of walking and listening: The people who most need to read this book and have the most to learn/gain from it are the ones who are gonna be uncomfortable and probably pissed off by it. Which is why it exists in the first place.

The Little Rock 9. Prince Edward County, VA just completely disregarding Brown V board of education . And other embarrassing parts of our history that we, apparently, haven’t learned from.
