Picked it up again with proper classes and have been following it along with Minna No Nihongo I. They seem to complement each other quite well.

I have read the first part of this book. I tried to read it all before my trip to Japan as I am very much interested in Japanese culture and food and this book did not disappoint. It has a great pace and the right level of detail for someone interested in the history and context of Japanese cuisine while also giving enough background about the historic context that led to such changes in Japan's gastronomy.

Made it to the hiragana chart. It is a bit awkward to navigate and found it requires quite a lot of "outside the book" studying, not necessarily bad, but found it hard to make progress using the book alone

I've put this book on hold for now. I absorbed quite a lot of the first third of this book and found it pretty eye-opening and inspiring. However some of the concepts still felt alien to me, probably due to the lack of background. I've put it on hold since I wasn't absorbing so much on the second third of the book and found others that suited my current interests, I'll definitely come back to it
