not to be a misandrist but the reason this book has been slow going is I'm finding it difficult to invest myself in this man. He needs to go and take a fucken shower. Maybe I would be more sympathetic if I imagined him in my bed instead of the one my brain has created for it. I'm really liking the bits where he retells Fenian stories though, fantastically beautiful and unusual prose.

very good but a bit of a mixed bag tbh. lots of really vital analysis/interpretation of Marx, some interesting conclusions and some very dubious conclusions. some analysis which is very dated and now seems very short sighted - especially the section on how there "is no longer any need to preach against the 'work ethic'". if only!

Ironically, considering the intention to provide a work of political analysis, the introduction so far has a lot of plain old ideological posturing. But there is an incredibly important kernel of truth which the intro begins to lay out:
"[Capital] provides a fundamental insight into the nature of categories and relations in capitalist society: there are always two perspectives, capital’s versus the working class’s"
