26 minutes in and we are already talking about settler colonialism and fire and how it’s not just climate change. I like you.

starting an Angeline Boulley book at 8 PM is a BAD CHOICE if one wants to put the book down and go to sleep at a reasonable hour

Middling. But not that many SAR books have audiobook options, so. And also, maybe I just don't have the right attitude about east coast mountains.

Dude I get that you’re a purist I swear I do. But if the only climbers you really ding for working with sherpas and using oxygen just happen to be women…no they don’t.

amazing how much LESS racist/colonial/generally offensive this (published before i was born) book is than that horrendous "third pole" climbing book, which was published in 2021. honestly, i was fully expecting Annapurna to be "not as sexist at least but a product of its time" in comparison.

imagine if this dude cared 1% as much about the genocide of Indigenous people as he does about the death of wild animals. very white vegan energy here.

I’m listening to this again because I needed something that I wouldn’t feel bad about only half paying attention to. But it seems I am paying attention enough to get the distinct sense that the entire point of this book has working up to absolving settler colonialism of the destruction of the buffalo.

Best thing I got from The Other Olympians was the rec for this excellent book. Almost makes up for listening to entire book based on the premise that white supremacy *didn't exist* before the nazi germany.

this is not at ALL what i thought it was going to be, and also your dna test doesn't a. make you Indigenous b. excuse you from writing colonizer bullshit. not sure i will be finishing this. taking a break and listening to The Rediscovery of America, which while somewhat dry is fascinating and not irritating.

So a central theme in this book seems to be a white settler woman's spiritual relationship with the land. i'm not saying settlers can't EVER have spiritual relationships with this land...but the fact that Motheater derives extraordinary power from her relationship with Kire, a relationship Kire seems to have chosen while Indigenous people existed (~1875) and exist (present-day) rings super false to me.
