So far I think this novel is some kind of allegory about religion and the pursuit of existential knowledge ???

The House is symbolic of life. If we spend our lives trying to figure it out we forget to live.

Loving the use of birds as symbolism. Birds typically represent messages between this reality and the spirit realm. The idea of weighing your soul against a feather comes to mind.
The statues, religious references and this liminal place of The House remind me of scenes in the Narnia series
