I'm within 50 pages of the end of this book, and the trial is taking place. It's thrilling, and it feels immersive and exciting. The author takes the very issue of human justice into the narrative, and it's wonderful.

Ok I'm FINALLY out of the tool section! My impression of the book so far is a mumbling. rambling explanation from an experienced woodworker who can't tell what direction his lesson is going. He's certainly detailed in his explanations, but the text is exhausting and has almost nothing to do with actual boat joinery. I accept the necessity of a tools section, but this is way too much.

a decent read so far, though I'm still not out of the tools section. I think it covers three whole chapters, which is aggravating. What I would prefer is the author to give an overview of the whole subject, then divide subsequent chapters from simple tasks that can be accomplished with a minimum of tools to the more complex tasks that require specialized tools. That way the reader doesn't suffer on a long tool list.

The pages won't add up because I'm reading the trilogy. But today's reading has to do with the wreck of the Pandora and the crew's desperate sailing in a launch to safety. I found myself thinking- the protagonist's plight is all of ours- we are wanderers under a death sentence, hoping to survive long enough to get to our own scaffold. It's a haunting predicament.

This is an awesome book. So far I am at the point where Dave is on the verge of professional success and recognition and it is fantastic. I take so much encouragement from Dave's story- not that if you come from his background or do what he did then you will inevitably find success, but that success can come from anywhere and to anyone.

Very easy to read. Also, I noticed that one person reviewing the book noted that the vast majority of the book's subjects were, 'obvious'. Perhaps that person wanted to sound smart or maybe they engage in shallow thought because despite the subject material having simple concepts, its application and ramifications are complex and thought-provoking.

So far it's pretty good- I would say it's engaging! Though I have to admit a certain amount of bias; I have been enjoying the Aubrey-Maturin audiobooks lately and I feel that C.S. Forester's continual presence in the protagonist's head is a bit annoying. Hornblower really isn't a character that I admire.
