Not sure if this is a theme amongst all of Shirley Jackson's protagonist, but I noticed both M.C. and Eleanor from The Haunting of Hill House are prone to flights of fancy, often either childish or macabre, both to extremes. The silly fantasies make these characters seem whimsical and innocent, while the dark ones remind you these are adults who have seen terrible things, and may yet be responsible for some others.
