Ah, the classic horror trope of supposedly intelligent people behaving like absolute morons... Always there, always frustrating!

Very good at bringing out more characters throughout for you to care about before they (presumably) get eaten by creatures of the deep!

Introducing characters in a way that means you care about what happens to them is such a great way to build up a horror story! If this hasn't been optioned for a film yet then it's only a matter of time

I'm already loving this, the "putting the team together" aspect is very Jurassic Park and Grant's writing (I just noticed that "Grant" is another JP coincidence) really reminds me of Crichton's, the near future (at time of writing) sci-fi setting, with very apt science, as well as the pacing is very similar to his work, this is already a brilliant read!

Killer mermaids? Sounds bloody brilliant to me, I'm in!

King just has the ability to write a book that pulls you along so quickly that even when you know what's going to happen (in this one he literally tells you) it's still an exciting read! Man got mad skillz bruv

A second book in a row where the premice is basically how nasty high school aged kids are to one another!

It's October, it's spooky season, and what spooky season is complete without a bit of the master of horror himself Mr. King? His first ever novel as well!

So far I feel that the true horror in this novel is the 1980s themselves!

I'm enjoying it so far, slow in terms of action but quite fast to read, a little heavy handed with some of the messaging but it hasn't disappointed me so far

Hmm... Intriguing... Not sure exactly what this one's about but looking forward to finding out...

For a "thriller" it's really not that thrilling... I'm curious about what's going to happen but not riveted...

It has intrigued me but not yet hooked me...

A dark, spooky, mystery thriller set in Scotland!? Don't mind if I do!

4/5 Quite a harrowing story about SA and women not being believed, or even demonised for it

Story two 4.5/5 another story about loss and loneliness in a big city, which seem to be common themes in Enriquez's work as well, a bit macabre that she used a real life death as a basis for this story, but at the same time the death of Elisa Lam is a fascinatingly creepy one, I just feel so bad for her family and friends that they never get any peace from it...

It's October! Which means it's spooky book season! As far as I'm aware this is the only book by my favourite Argentinian author, Mariana Enriquez which has been translated to English that I'm yet to read. A strong start My Sad Dead 5/5, really perfect short story to sum up Enriquez's style, supernatural reflecting the horrors of reality.

I have to confess that I'm not enjoying this as much as I've enjoyed the non sci-fi books I've read from Banks. I won't write off his sci-fi as a lot of people have told me that this isn't the best anyway, but I'm less excited by this than I expected to be and I am finding this dragging a little bit...

Really enjoying this and it's a fast book to read despite its length. I want to finish before October so that I can start on my spooky books for Halloween season

I heard the criticisms about this being kind of episodic, but I think that going into it prepared for that was a good idea, and I'm glad that I did start with this as there is a lot of universe building within the Cultureverse

I've read three Iain Banks novels but never read any of his Iain M. Banks sci-fi. I'm a fan of sci-fi, I loved his writing style in his non sci-fi stuff so I figured that it's about time I gave this a shot! I know Consider Phlebas isn't supposed to be the best Culture novel, but it is the first so I'm starting here!

This really is making me want to play DnD again, proper old school fantastical fantasy!

So far I'm loving the writing style, I assumed I would having loved the three Le Guin novels I've read so far but it's nice to have my assumptions proved correct!

I love the amount of fourth wall breaks in this, the acknowledgement of metaphor and even ironic self nods to his writing style
