I don't think I realised just quite how long French was the language of the rulers of England. Kings William I, William II, Henry I, Stephen, Henry II, Richard I (the Lionheart), John, Henry III, Edward I, Edward II and Edward III probably spoke NO English at all. Only French and maybe some Latin. 300 years + and not one spoke the language of their people!
