Been meaning to read this book since I heard about it. Someone told me I would enjoy reading it bc it explores the crosstalk between culturally based healthcare practices and the western healthcare system. I just got started reading it and it does not disappoint. Since working with indigenous Shamans back in Medellin, I’ve been hungry to learn more about these perspectives! Yippee!

It’s crazy how many emotions this book has generated within me. I’ve been consistently on the verge of tears and we’re only getting started

Gotten into the medical ethics legal proceedings, really asking what a life is worth vs quality of life. Makes me think of the clinical trials started at the lab with the young candidates who feel like they have nothing to lose

This is such a hard read, some of these scenes are absolutely terrible. Too many heartbreaking stories, have needed to put this book down several times. Makes me think about what the disasters of the future have in store, and whether we have learned from the past to lead a better prepared future.

So far the imagery, the emotions, and the chaos throw you into what it means to be working in a nola hospital in 2005. These physicians were truly the arbiters of life and death by determining who would be worth saving and who would be euthanized given the present circumstances—an unenviable position that no amount of training can prepare anyone for
