I read this in 8th grade after obsessing over the movie. I remember almost nothing about it other than the story is pretty different.
And yeah, the world building is already so different. Wtf do you mean his mom had cat ears???

Whatever my earlier gripes with the audio narrator were, I take it back. He does the emotional escalation scenes SOOOOOOO well
The book shows the really difficult side of living under oppression and government registration. But its so wholesome too (I say with tears streaming down my face every 10 minutes)

Doing a foster care interview and the kid asking the adults if there's enough food for everyone?? What if I just die of a broken heart??

But also the courts are right. You cant keep sleeping with your case managers and expect people to see their reports as objective.

Chat im so excited this book came in much earlier than expected.
But Im also realizing that the setting and characters are supposed to be British. And the narrator is NOT giving them accents when he clearly can. Hearing an American voice talk about beans on toast feels evil
