i have discovered that the reason that the men are referred to as "son of __" is because they had no surnames at the time, so they used their fathers to distinguish between men. maybe thats why there was __, son of __, son of __ a few pages ago

so is odysseus playing a double bluff almost ? was agamemnon actually accidentally smart about tricking his men into leaving cos that wouldve spared him possibly. or did agamemnon do this to get more of the spoils

i wonder if zeus' lack of status in the descriptions is because he's helping both sides? like can he not refuse eto aid any of the gods. obviously hera sides with the greeks, but thetus sides with her son achilles, who, despite being on the same side as agagemnon, doesn't like him for stealing his prize , which just helps the trojans

i love how they refer to zeus in diff ways depending on how much they want to puss him off (hera - con of cronos, hepheastus - olympian thunderer)
also the way they quarrel about all this reminds of the game makers in the hunger games -- making choices about human lives only to treat them like pieces on a gameboard.

why am i only now realising that zeus and hera are siblings, and athene is with an e and not athena (just looked it up both are used athene is just older) and are these fakes supporting the trojans, i wonder if this gets explored. (it does kinda)

this samuel butler lad (translator) is being annoying in this page lol, i can appreciate the 'idiomatic' nature of his translation that i am yet to read, but changing a Greek novel.poem to Roman names because of better public reception is pure shite.
the footnotes left by the publisher are so funny they changed the names back to greek lmao and jsut got rid of his "not very helpful" notes

updating from what i already have :
idiomatic - to use language that is natural and flows like it would for a native speaker, using figurative meanings rather than literal. (i didnt know waht this meant) (from the preface)
