I just read a chapter about how the Kurdish separatist movement, who regularly sets fires in Turkey’s national forests, are pro-ecology. The past 40 pages have villainized Turks and Iranians for the sake of a supposed intellectual war against colonization when we are oppressed by Islamic Fascism just as much as Kurds are. I wish Dr Dirik had more non-Kurdish friends.

“Autonomous organization is crucial for women to retake all that has been stolen from them…” yet she writes like its a given sympathizers will be maimed for their cause. Apo is their feminist hero and Turks are seen as morons who can’t see his light. Reading this while MHP are once again using him like a toy is a reminder of why great leaders don’t create their own cult of personality.

“Theory” allocates the political nature of “decolonization” to the Kurdish struggle due to their statelessness. What if PKK changes their mind and want a state, like they did in the 80s? The author constructs a cult of Apo, an imprisoned “intellectual” through which the Kurdish struggle will deconstruct capitalism & nationalism. Again, no account for loss of innocent lives.

“History” read like Turks were killing and lying an innocent people who were so desparate that they were regularly setting themselves on fire to bring attention to their plight. Perhaps this would’ve been better as a spoken story around a campfire.

I did learn about atrocities commited in Diyarbakir prison amongst causes for PKK’s unfortunately justified self defenses but this doesnt revive innocent lives.

I’m lost as to why I ever thought Sun Yat Sen was a big deal when Cixi was so good at delegating and being a true leader, even when she was at the disposal of poorly thinking masses like the Boxers…

Windigo as a tale of overindulgence
Ecological economics > neoclassical economics view of ceaseless growth
This was after a chapter on restoring a forest previously logged out of existence by a couple. I learned our forest lands are named with numbers and old growth forest replacement is not preferred - tall trees for future timber are encouraged.

I’m trying very hard to get into this as a story without trying to connect it to my memories of WW1. I keep judging myself that I forgot so many details of this and then creating to do lists in my head to look up battles.

I just noticed the brilliant organization of this book. I finished the chapters on Dr Kimmerer’s first hike with students v one that is more fine tuned and brave. Afterwards, she got into how the preservation the hike benefitted from before “the squatters” could be restored by field-loving biologists. What a beautiful day of reading hope.

I never knew a story about a woman dredging a pond with a rake for swimming over 12 years could give me this much peace.

One of those mornings you casually find out Pfizer killed schizophrenia research because it took too long and AbbVie was rejected by Abbott in developing a drug that you had to take too many times.

And of course, a tiny paragraph on how purchasing a patent about to expire from a university is too expensive for these gazillionaire companies…regardless of common good.
