Ch 18. The opening chapters nearly put me off, initial tone felt very YA in an unappealing way with irrelevant side characters chatting about badgers. Lots of tell don’t show for the Briar/Seb friendship backstory. Main cast was introduced in a way that made many forgettable. I can only really remember Briar, Seb, Watson and vaguely the guy who got shot. But the story is really picking up now so I’ll read more

seriously… Elend is more powerful than Vin?? why??? and he’s still calling Vin paranoid while also acknowledging that she’s usually right, why does he have to use that word? I thought he was all “I trust my wife”last book and now he’s regressed a year later? Can’t he just accept that she’s got good intuition? I’m so done with him.

Slow to start but I’m glad I persisted. A lot of the characters were frustrating me early on but I’m trusting that Sanderson is setting them up for some interesting character arcs. Elend was really pissing me off with how dismissive, sexist and undeserving he is, but Tindwyl’s influence is making him grow on me. I’m not sure I like him and Vin as a couple though. I love OreSeur and Zane is interesting.

It’s picking up now!

holy moly the info dumping is DENSE, there’s so many new names and locations being dropped I can’t keep up. also I’m a little frustrated with how the timeskip was done but ehhhh

I’m really enjoying this so far. Read four chapters in my first sitting and woke up in the morning looking forward to reading more. The characters are instantly likeable and the pacing is keeping me engaged. There’s some heavy world building at the beginning which I found to be a bit hard to follow but it wasn’t enough to deter me from continuing.

I haven’t picked this book up in the past week. :( reading it feels like a chore right now…

Parisa’s power has FINALLY become interesting - in this chapter she dove into Dalton’s mind and the way Blake described her magic was dreamlike. I’m still not interested in Parisa and Dalton as characters, although Dalton’s subconscious and backstory is intriguing.

The magic system is interesting, but I feel like the author keeps too much secret and doesn’t really create mystery besides the complete lack of information. Atlas’s initial invitation to the Soceity has next to zero information to intrigue you, and now that they’re there I’m nearly half way through the book before there’s some vague suggestion of “people are going to die”??? Okay??? Do I care???

Starting to pick up! I enjoyed the combat scenes during “The Installation” and the pacing seems to have picked up. Nico was a bit annoying during the combat but I’m starting to like Libby more.

Struggling with the second person and lack of Gideon in the story. Seems to be really slow too, can’t really tell you what’s happened other than Harrow spending a bunch of time in a hospital room

Starting to pick up the pace - been very slow to start until now. Way too much time spent on character exposition which didn’t make characters likeable. Many characters are insufferable and some significant characters like Dalton aren’t fleshed out enough. Currently I only like Tristan. I disliked Nico at first but he’s warming on me. Meh on Callum, Reina, Atlas and Dalton. Can’t stand Libby or Parisa.
