I think this is the first time in about ten years that I don't have a book going. I haven't started, nor am I in the middle of any book whatsoever. It feels weird and kinda horrible. I feel vulnerable and am liable to grab any old crap I find next.

We'll just say I'm "halfway" finished, because I have no idea. I'm not reading this from start to finish, just in bits and pieces. It's very textbook-like, so I've flipped around here and there, reading what intrigues me the most. Sooner or later I'll take it all in!

Characterizations are crisp, quickly and precisely getting to the crux of the character the moment they appear on the scene. You immediately know has much as you need to about that person.

Churning prose that keeps the action moving

I'm getting Constantine (the Keanu Reeves movie) vibes from this. Also, the narration reminds me a bit of an old school, hardboiled detective novel, and I mean that kindly, because I really enjoy those.

Lots of world-building. Mainly about a code of knights in the desert. Reminds me of a Wilbur Smith novel I read recently.

Felt like a rough start, but that might be just me. It always seems like I have a hard time with the beginnings of books from a series or author I’m new to. Guess I’m just getting used to the writing style or something. Anyway, this settles down to some fairly solid writing with a few pleasantly flowing passages now and then.

I've read Witness before, but this time I'm listening to the audiobook narrated by the late-great Christopher Lee. Man, he brings the gravitas!
