why is this actually so good im eating this up fr

cool world building and fun characters… but the cast is definitely bloated and there are some parts that would read better as an essay than fiction. i think this author would have benefitted from letting the story speak for itself—trusting the audience to understand—and not referencing things in footnotes or in narration. it’s good and important information but is a bit jarring at times. enjoying this tho.

i think it should be a crime that when we finally get to the chapter on batman and robin, the author spends OVER HALF the chapter summarizing hamlet (which i have never read in my life obviously and need that summary for /sarcasm) to pretty much come to the conclusion that yeah batman and hamlet really aren’t that similar. what if i started hurting people. what then. what’s the psychology of that.

ngl this is so nothing burger. why does this author act as if we’ve never read a batman comic before. pls. no more gotham rogues recaps or recaps of every single batman incarnation. just dig slightly deeper than the surface. please. i promise we can handle it. “the riddler has compulsive tendencies” yeah brother a ten year old who only watches batwheels could have told me that

a fascinating premise dulled by casual racism, rampant sexism, and anti-fat bias. i want to rate this book higher, but i cannot without getting a bitter taste in my mouth unfortunately. it’s truly upsetting reading from a point of view that asks philosophical questions of the world… while ultimately not challenging the world outside the straight, white, masculine gaze :/

sci fi authors will ask “is anybody else gonna describe every female character’s bust in detail each time they show up?” and not wait for an answer... -_-

i had the same problem with do androids dream of electric sheep, though that one was much worse. i love sci-fi, but it kills me how saturated with misogyny the genre is.

reminiscent of a very easy death by simone de beauvoir but with a slightly different focus. i love ernaux’s style—it reads with a strange mix of elegance and rawness.
