loving this so far. having the protagonist dream in verse was an excellent choice. im braindead rn and can’t give a better analysis but what it’s saying about reality and fiction, poetry and reason, women and the world, aughhh i love it.

i’m so sad that raffles, the amateur cracksman (1903) play by e.w. hornung & eugene presbrey isn’t listed as a book on here… oh well. that’s what i’m reading right now anyways—even though i can’t add it to my shelf.

“One’s always embarrassed or delighted by one’s own photograph, but in either case also surprised. In life, even if you include the false perspective of the mirror, you’re the person you see the least; and the best, composite image of yourself, the one you want to keep, is the specially prepared face that you try to summon up when you pose for your photograph.”

my jaw is on the floor. i have been reading this all day today, and it truly does not waste a single page. memoirs, primary sources, secondary sources, countless reliable references to modern and ancient literary and historical scholarship—it has it all. this work is genuinely faith-saving, as i know i have personally struggled with my christianity due to evangelical sexist standards so prominent within the church.

“Political purpose — using the word political in the widest possible sense. Desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society that they should strive after. Once again, no book is genuinely free from political bias. The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.”

amen brother.

although i agreed with 95% of this book (and don’t doubt hooks’s experience in the midst of the movement), i assumed this would be more comprehensive; however, it focuses exclusively on american feminism from the 1960s onward. it also relied heavily on vague statements rather than specific, statistical/tangible evidence or testimony of women. it’s okay but not a good starting place for feminist thought.

there’s nothing with which i particularly disagree, but i would love more concrete examples. for instance, i do not think it is incorrect to assert that women face unattainable beauty standards due to narrow representations of femininity in media—but i wish there was cited a specific popular commercial, statistics of young girls with eating disorders, or the economics of a makeup industry to prove her points.

this is startlingly good.

“My life, my health is my greatest good. … I want to live well and be someone. I want to be sure that I won’t be persecuted, reviled, treated as a lower category being. I have no sense of solidarity with persecuted creatures; they disgust me!”

he is so self-focused that he feels no sympathy for people he will soon become if he continues in inaction. amazing.
