i’m so sad that raffles, the amateur cracksman (1903) play by e.w. hornung & eugene presbrey isn’t listed as a book on here… oh well. that’s what i’m reading right now anyways—even though i can’t add it to my shelf.

i know i read it just a couple month ago, but i have to start this series over again. i love it so much.

my jaw is on the floor. i have been reading this all day today, and it truly does not waste a single page. memoirs, primary sources, secondary sources, countless reliable references to modern and ancient literary and historical scholarship—it has it all. this work is genuinely faith-saving, as i know i have personally struggled with my christianity due to evangelical sexist standards so prominent within the church.

although i agreed with 95% of this book (and don’t doubt hooks’s experience in the midst of the movement), i assumed this would be more comprehensive; however, it focuses exclusively on american feminism from the 1960s onward. it also relied heavily on vague statements rather than specific, statistical/tangible evidence or testimony of women. it’s okay but not a good starting place for feminist thought.

there’s nothing with which i particularly disagree, but i would love more concrete examples. for instance, i do not think it is incorrect to assert that women face unattainable beauty standards due to narrow representations of femininity in media—but i wish there was cited a specific popular commercial, statistics of young girls with eating disorders, or the economics of a makeup industry to prove her points.

this is startlingly good.

he is so self-focused that he feels no sympathy for people he will soon become if he continues in inaction. amazing.

this book is a little too slow (and, sadly, not at all spooky yet). we arrived at the dragon volant, left immediately, and still haven’t even gotten back to it yet. honk choooo zzzzz…

a decent companion to the nier game for the superfans, but not something anyone is missing out on by skipping. this was a good read for my tired brain (familiar storyline + easy prose), but some of the heart was missing. overall, it was just okay. i enjoyed the insights to nier’s character, but that was the only true highlight. i just love this series sm so it gets points for that alone. and emil. i love emil.
