In "The Silence Between Us" I'm still confused as to why Maya doesn't want to get a C.I. She has discussed that she doesn't want one because being deaf makes her, her. However I find it strange because you would still be deaf you would just have an aid that could help you hear and communicate more easily. This could of helped because when she applied for a job she was denied due to being deaf.

In "The Silence Between Us," Maya's history teacher shouts at her. Maya gets frustrated because she can't hear, so she tells Mr. Wells that "[It] doesn't matter if you shout, I can't hear you" (31 Gervais). An unspoken rule is that you don't shout at a deaf person because it comes across as rude and inconsiderate.

I learned that ASL came from French sign language and that ASL is recently new with it being created using 200+ years of deaf families and their passing of knowledge to form ASL to what it is today. This helps me better understand the book because when they sign it seems choppy when they speak because there aren't words for everything so sentences don't flow like they do when we speak English.
