Chapter two, page 56- there are so many parallels to what’s happing in the US right now thought this books but chapter this in particular is uncanny. Minnesota vs ICE, innocent protestors being murdered in the street and ‘the veneer of civilization which has protected us from their hatred was stripped away’.

Mary Trye - Medicatrix - latin phrase which roughly translates to Nature reinforced is the best treatment for all diseases. A practitioner. Not only a deceleration of principles which is bold enough, but also a confident assertion of a
self fashioned identity.

woman physician in 1674 in England was called Medicatrix or doctor but by middle of 18th century this was an impossibility or a freak of nature. only 100 years went by and there were little to no female doctors.

Scientific revolution and chemical medication.

An account of what happened to Lyle and Gita in a prison camp based in real life. Not super impressive writing, interesting but at times seems at times stretched.

Elizabeth Blackwell’s A curious herbal glorified the scientific approach to medication, promoted its connection with physicians and apothecaries and denigrated women as meditators.

After the black plague apothecaries started giving remedy advice and advising, not just selling the herbs.

to the artist - no such thing as reality because the world was as you chose to see it.

favorite part of this book is that the protagonist rebels against social and gender norms. Drives a hurst that has ‘school bus’ and taxi painted on the side. Tough and learned how to work hard and get by from a very early age. Worked as a school teacher around the war.
