smelling smoke on a cold morning - temperature inversion - creates a sandwich effect warm air trapping cold air below - sound,light,radio waves bounce the top of the cold layer and the ground. Things in the distance look like they are floating, - optical illusion - Fata morgana, possible to pick up radio waves 100’s of miles away, flash of green at moment of sunset.

south sides of hillside - more vegetation, snow lines, tree lines, and habitation will reach slightly higher. plants germinate 4 days prior on this side

Highest point on a hill or mountains there will be surveyors’ trig point - trigonomerical station, in good visibility you should be able to spot at least 2 others on high points in the distance.
