This Mike guy is two thumbs down 👎

This story just feels regular (but in a positive way). Right now it’s focused on a group of young friends about to take their place in their society and it just feels slice of life :)

Not completely vibing with either of the men in the picture right now. Mike is rude and I’m not sure why she is dating him and Chris is annoying.

Also this line stuck out to me this reading session. “Nothing holds it together except an idea which is indestructible.” Also, “There is no possibility that any perceptible change will happen within our own lifetime. We are the dead. Our only true life is in the future.”

I’m so serious this book is amazing!!!!!! It feels like a warm hug after a long day in the rain. It is about everything that could be, has been, and is good about life!!! I LOVE IT!!!

So serious this is such a comforting book! Like I feel so happy listening to this. This is more motivational than any other self-help or motivational book I’ve ever read. It’s so short but SO GOOD!

Ok I stand by my 3/5 because of the pacing and there was a sub plot that takes place in Paris, which I think is not needed at all. Overall, this is a great book that captures the successes and hardships (for lack of a better word) of Black people’s lives in the Civil War, Jim Crow, and onwards. A great read to get an overarching scope, but could have dived deeper in many places.

1. You can’t marry a racist plantation owner, turn your head when he joins Kx3, and expect him to be a good man.

2. You can’t join Kx3 and think you are better than everyone else in the group.

3. People are dealing in secrets and just letting it happen!! Like you just learned your brother was murdered (justifiably) and you are just going to keep it hush hush??

Strictly in a literary sense, so far it’s a 3/5 because the plot is ALL over the place. There was a scene that could have been more emotionally pulling, if it did not only last 7 sentences. I am also soooo confused what the main conflict is (besides slavery, racism, the Civil War). I understand this is about Felix’s life, but what about it???

Just realized my kobo does the % for me. So I’ve been doing unnecessary math :(

Catch this in my DnF shelf! It felt like ramming my head into a wall! Like!! YIKES!!!

A couple things:
1. Every chance these people get, they disappoint so severely it’s insane! But to also know the thoughts and beliefs of White people in this book are still very much alive today is so severely disappointing.

2. Certain plot points that seemed important earlier are just being dropped with one sentence about them so idk how I feel about that :/

The last two-three chapters have moved soooo fast! Like it did move up the timeline a few years which was ok but even after that timeline shift like 3 people die, one kid gets adopted then dies, someone is travelling to Europe, and it was honestly A LOT to gloss over. I would have really enjoyed seeing more of the adopted brother relationship :(
