Language is, understandably from this author, beautiful, and there are some really deep quotes in here. But from my perspective, that’s all there is. No more substance than that. The plot holds so much potential, a father and son duo surviving a scalding wasteland, and yet none of it is ever explained, nor does anything crazy ever happen. Every day is exactly the same. Maybe that’s the point, but… no.

How he writes, aka his tone as a writer, is what sells the book— and in the post-book interview, they say the exact thing. Even as a chef, he is certainly talented in writing, and A.B. has such a unique outlook on life in general. Truly missing a wonderful person.

The concept is really good, and the sprinkles of comedy are great throughout. Execution is… interesting. But being my internship coworker, I must celebrate this with higher praise than normal for a first-time author, and can’t wait for the second book.

4.5 stars ⭐️ I just— dude somebody actually needs to get the FBI on this author man, they are genuinely not well. Ending was so messed up I had to take a minute to breathe. I felt so bad for Marcos for all the shitty people in his life but that is no excuse for everything he ended up doing, oh my lord. Also for some reason reading this kept putting me right to sleep, so I guess that’s comforting.

There is no good that comes out of this.

3.5 ⭐️ The most amount of technical talk in a book I’ve ever seen— not that I’m complaining. I just don’t think it fits well with the following slap-dash commentary that goes with it. Character ambition is a little all over the place but overall it’s a fun read!

4.5 stars ⭐️ the writing in this is delicious, but the concepts are even more tasty. Office politics mean nothing in the apocalypse— or do they? Makes you realize how much we’d cling to capitalism and mundanity in the face of great change. Want to kiss the author so badly.

3.5 stars ⭐️ Was the writing arguably bad compared to other books I read? Yes, of course. Did I dislike quite a few decisions the author made? Yeah. Hated that Murderbot was childishly whiny, among other things. Will I buy and read the rest of the series because this is one of the only books that tackles a theme I love? Yes, absolutely, and I think because of that I can stand it. Also ART, my beloved, I need you
