"Poor thing's hurtin from her hooter to her tooter." 😂 It’s good to be back in Slaughter’s rural North Falls, Georgia.

“You should turn your eyes, and above all, your debauched cunt toward God. Otherwise you’ll surely fly off into outer space again and then the only option you’ll have is electro shock therapy.” —Advice given by Anna’s therapist after diagnosing her as a dendrophile because she f*cks a tree while somnabulating. Here I thought the book Sky Daddy was strange….

“The Archipelago of Threnody was a place of beautiful music and soaring tree bridges, masking a cutthroat dance where those not rising were inevitably falling.”

“Corban was retreating, their swords clashing, incandescent arcs tracing the flow of exchanges, a discordant melody of violence.”

Discovering Corban unknowingly names his wolven (Storm) and skewbald stallion (Shield), fulfilling Halvor’s ancient written prophecy of the Black Sun, Astroth’s champion.
“Before one, storm and shield shall stand…”
🤯

“Away from the path, the forest closed about them like a malignant wound, dark and treacherous.”

Why have I encountered 76 named characters and 8 unique POV’s in the first 100 pages of Malice? I didn’t realize I was in for a Malazan-like experience with Gwynne’s Faithful and the Fallen.

“Tho father regarded the female vagina as a ‘veritable hell-hole of filth and corruption’ and the female genitals as ‘loathsome in design, function, and aesthetics,’ yet somehow it happened, by gods interdiction, that nine of us were born of his loins.”

“Motherhood is a career in conformity from which no amount of subterfuge can liberate the soul without violence.”

“humanity is wretched in its essence, and we loathe to be reminded of our own rote repulsiveness.”

“Your nobles whore and hunt and fill their plates with meat and their glasses with wine while the common man starves in the gutter. The lives of an entire nation shouldn’t be subject to the whims of a single inbred fool.” p.18-19

“No reason, except that madness doesn’t need a reason, and it was precisely because he wasn’t crazy that this reason escaped him.”

“Paeter Aeternus is a cancer of the galaxy, and the Decurion Empire is its metastasis.”

She laughed, a brittle, hopeless sound. “They can’t make you? Look at you. Look at where you are. Look at who you’re sitting next to. They made us fuck. You were raped—by the state. Pater Aeternus can make us do anything they want. I refuse to believe you are this naive. I know you are not this stupid.”

“Patent Aeternus was so busy suppressing its people that its infrastructure was crumbling.”

“How tired she was of it all. The silliness of it. The insidiousness. The malevolence. Her life was a carousel of tedium, couched in a fairground of unspeakable, subtle, quiet horror.”

“A man of great knowledge matched only by his facility for deceit. He has done the foulest deeds in service to a woman who’s as mad as the most rabid bitch. Whatever your love for her, it’s meaningless. You think because she soils herself with your churl’s cock it means anything? You pitiable, idiotic fool.”

This omnibus contains the first four books of The Elric Saga. Taking a pause after book one.

“Its purpose is beyond my simple brain.”—Princess Cymoril

Cymoril’s been kidnapped, stripped, drugged, branded, groped, and it’s implied raped— by her brother and his Captain. While waiting around for Elric to come rescue her, she espouses the belief quoted above. Oh, and she’s the only woman in the story thus far. Reading classic fantasy is new to me and yikes, what a boys club it is.

“My family knows that their patriarch has wisdom beyond their own.”

“This is what I love about you Hazel, always so obedient and cheerful.”

“The gods care little for the follies of men. But I care, for without exposing such folly, superstition and prejudice make a mockery of justice. Let the gods judge me all they will; let me be the judge of other mortals.” p138

“Men of mean spirit and weak mind are easily swayed by the Riftborn. The Riftborn scratch at the veil between the worlds always. Poking and prodding, looking for ingress. And when the veil thins, they corrupt everything. Men are oftentimes too weak to resist the influence of the Rift.”

“Lasagne is a hot sarcophagus of deliciousness.”

“He dreamt of ripping people’s heads apart and bathing in an enormous vat of their blood. He dreamt of burning, immolating his physical form with whale oil and pleasuring himself in the flames.” Join the club 😂
Listening to the audiobook this time around. Nathaniel Priestley’s performance is phenomenal while Zoe Mills is borderline insufferable. 😣

“Your city is a madness.” p51

“Fola had never been a particularly linear thinker - she blamed a great deal of her repeated failures with the research board on her inability to explicitly connect the dots of her ideas. Her thought process was more holistic, like a spell.”

This novel is essentially an inverted version of Kirsten King’s book cover for ‘A Good Person.’ It appears that Howarth’s version was published first but how does this even happen? The publisher art departments are getting lazy.

“You must understand, my lady, that I am completely insane, and I have made it my goal to murder or convert every last Nemanist in the city.”- von Oldenburg
“Apologies, my lord; I didn’t catch that.”
😆

“Gods’ blood and fuck, think on it,”
Oh, how I missed Count Lamprecht von Oldenburg’s eloquent way with words. 🤭

“History was a great churn….in which kings, queens, countries, and castles were in continuous chaotic motion, swelling their borders, swallowing their neighbors, dying of indigestion.”
