if you are a woman in a book about men, you are unfortunately destined to die to further their suffering. which yeah i guess is the point of the revenge, but good lord does it feel a bit gratuitous. like did this daughter fr had to be here to get shot.

is it not enough that she doesnt want to be around her fuckass dad for alcoholism and he suffers because of that?

to be a woman in a story fr is to just get pregnant and die, huh. or imply cheating and die. good lord

these stories are full of heart and soul. every story in this anthology. i do love learning every little detail through the perspective of Okanogan

gripping tales of Coyote against the horrible monsters of the world is paired well with whimsy and paints an ethereal nature of the world’s animal spirits.

super recommend for those that want to learn about native stories.

a bittersweet feeling of reading what would be best shared in oral tradition, but also knowing that if these stories were not written down it would be lost to the native american youth of today as their elders pass away without those stories.

it feels wrong, in a way, like the only reason this exists is because of colonization and cornering natives into a written record.

prologue was fun! setting up all the key players. it’s reading like a horror-monster movie / whistleblowing investigation drama and i do love that sorta intrigue!! i was mistaken by the chapter’s start and end, so NOW i’m starting chapter one.

finished ch 1 — love a sisterly bond despite difference in interests (that still cross over somehow) trope. victoria’s motivations for her voyage made clear and i find it interesting the mother was fully named!

it’s giving 20k leagues (of which i’m reading alongside), gonna keep reading now

hoping for ghost sister or shes alive the whole time, cool mom ship captain, and underground city

getting close to being a DNF,
eight chapters in and the dead have not risen , and the characters have done very little that pushes the plot forward. the world is horrible, but only explored so far in the “oh god theyre killing women and children” way so im pretty over it

reads so far like a pretty basic “i’m not your dad” to “damn, i might be your dad” plot so far. the first monster description and the reaction to it is a little lackluster, which has taken some wind out of my sails for reading this.

i want to enjoy a medieval horror, but i dunno about this one so far

love opening up with a native american getting jumped by white people and implications of weird horrific third party watchers (sarcasm)

i’m enjoying this science fiction classic so far. :-)
i find some difficulty here and there with how clunky some sentences can be, but otherwise enjoyable.

story so far, prof. annorax, conseil, and ned have fallen off the ship that was hunting the mythic “electric cetacean”. they’ve just learned that it’s actually a metal ship, and are being dragged in. :-)
