I love her to death, but so far, there is a whole lot of “telling” over “showing” and difficult to follow transitions in the writing that makes it hard to look past and be immersed in the story

Only reading this because we’re having book club featuring Richard Paul Evans next month (?!)

He really was a good guy, Snow. His first act as a Peacekeeper was him taking the bottom bunk because the other kid was afraid of heights. That little detail really brought back the humanness. Gosh, Suzanne Collins really is amazing. Her writing is so easy to read

“Coriolanus stumbled onto the platform with a throbbing head and sandpaper mouth.”

“Sweat didn’t dry, only deepened.”

“Perspiration trickled down his back, and the rose, so majestic that morning began to bend in resignation.“

He was always a little sick in the head, wasn’t he?

“One way or another, their fates were irrevocably linked.“

“The wind blew and dry seedpods scampered down the sands and stopped and then went on again.”

Really, really good similes here:
“They stood in the rain like farm animals.”
“By day the banished sun circles the earth like a grieving mother with a lamp.”
“Reflecting back the sun deep in the darkness like a flash of knives in a cave.”

“Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.”

You know it’s a good old book when it uses the word trundle.

“He pulled the blue plastic tarp off of him and folded it and carried it out to the grocery cart and packed it and came back with their plates and some cornmeal cakes in a plastic bag and a plastic bottle of syrup.”

Every time it says “the road” it feels like when they say the name of a movie in the dialogue.

“Then he just sat there holding the binoculars and watching the ashen daylight congeal over the land.”

“The unseen sun cast no shadow.”

“Where you’ve nothing else construction ceremonies out of air and breathe upon them.”

No chapters, only paragraphs. The road goes on and on. Life goes until it doesn’t, and then it goes on after that. The narrative seems so far removed because the father is just so out of it and in survival mode that he’s not feeling human anymore. He’s not feeling present anymore. He’s trucking forward, only surviving for his little son.

Only a little bit in, but this is very very interesting. It seems like prose poetry rather than a traditional anecdotal storytelling. We’re about to see lots of beautiful writing and phrasing.

“Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world.”

“The principles don’t change; our understanding of them does.”

“The woods were silent in their grief.” 😔👏🏼

Okay, had my 72 hr fantasy fast and now I’m ready to go

My last witchy book leftover from my Witches in Literature class that I never got around to reading. I think I’m gonna enjoy it when it’s not for an assignment

Another repeat offender on the Goodreads. I swear I’ll get to it one of these times

Holy, my cravings for fantasy have been completely wiped thanks to SJM. This is going to be torture to try to get through. But it’s book club😃 my fomo will triumph!
